In younger patients who have had previous injuries which has caused the bone to become malaligned, or in cases where the alignment is genetically a bit out of line causing one side of the knee to be painful, there are techniques where we can move the bone to correct the alignment.

The way this is done is with a controlled surgical cut in the bone, or an osteotomy, moving the bone to the correct position, then plating the bone to allow it to heal in its new improved alignment. Often this can be done with preoperative patient specific cutting guides and occasionally with computerised navigation to confirm the final corrected alignment. This technique is useful for those with minimal arthritis but pain along one side of the joint from the weight bearing forces travelling eccentrically through the joint.

We have much more information to give you about knee injuries!
